Introducing Red Bird Nest

We’re excited to introduce Red Bird Nest, a nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to printmaking and book arts in Houston through community-driven programming and outreach.

We believe these practices are powerful tools for connection, storytelling, and creative expression - but access to space, equipment, and instruction required can be limiting. Red Bird Nest exists to help remove those barriers and open the field to a broader, more diverse community of artists and learners.

Our Approach

Through scholarships, public workshops, and collaborative programs, Red Bird Nest creates opportunities for artists of all backgrounds and experience levels to engage with printmaking and book arts in meaningful and sustained ways.

At its foundation, Red Bird Nest is guided by a shared belief:
printed communication and art hold a democratic power to empower individuals and communities.

Our work is rooted in:

  • Accessibility and inclusion

  • Hands-on learning and skill-building

  • Collaboration across artists, educators, and communities

Programs are offered in partnership with local artists, educators, and creative spaces, like Red Bird Press, as well as through community outreach initiatives across Houston.

What We Support

Red Bird Nest for Book Arts and Print develops and supports programs such as:

  • Scholarships for classes and workshops

  • Free and low-cost community programming

  • Artist-led workshops and teaching opportunities

  • Outreach partnerships with schools and community organizations

By reducing financial and structural barriers, we aim to make printmaking and book arts more accessible, while supporting the growth of artists and creative communities throughout Houston.

Printmaking and book arts have deep historical roots that have shaped the way we communicate, organize, and share ideas.

Red Bird Nest embraces the responsibility of being stewards of that history, supporting the use, care, and continued relevance of traditional processes and equipment, while encouraging contemporary exploration.

This work is not about preservation alone—it’s about keeping these practices alive through use, learning, and exchange.

A Focus on Access, Education, and Exchange

At its core, Red Bird Nest is rooted in the belief that printmaking and book arts are sustained through shared knowledge, hands-on learning, and collective exchange.

Through workshops, publishing efforts, and collaborative projects, the Nest works to:

  • Expand access to book arts and printmaking practices

  • Foster meaningful connections between artists and the broader community

  • Encourage the exchange of ideas through printed work

We believe that education and activation through art can build new relationships—ones that strengthen both artists and the communities they are part of.

Centered in Community

Printmaking and book arts have always been inherently collaborative—rooted in shared tools, shared knowledge, and shared purpose.

Red Bird Nest continues that tradition by supporting:

  • Inclusive, accessible opportunities for artists

  • Community-driven learning environments

  • The tools and resources necessary to sustain these practices

Because access matters—and because these mediums remain as relevant today as ever.

Red Bird Nest is not a place—it’s a commitment.
To access. To education. To history.
And to the continued power of print and the book as tools for connection and change.
